Hot Flashes are Back with a Vengeance

I think I have been going through menopause for at least 30 years now. It sure feels that way. I thought the symptoms were getting better but then the hot flashes came back. With a vengeance. I’m sweating in places no one should sweat. And it’s no mist either. It’s a full on rain forest over here.

My sleep is off again too. Used to be if I had trouble sleeping, I could pop a few Tylenol PMs and I would hit REM sleep faster than a rabbit being chased by a rabid fox. Not so much anymore. Now I’m up and down at night. It’s sleep deprivation all over again. I suddenly can relate to the new moms who are also sleep deprived. Look what you have to look forward to ladies!

And waking up is oh so hard. I used to never hit the snooze button. Now I can hit it at least three times before I realize I was even oversleeping. Some mornings I feel like I can’t wake up at all. I mean not even Sleeping Beauty’s Prince Charming could kiss me awake. Maybe more like the hot barista from Starbucks with a Grande Cafรฉ Mocha in a Venti cup with extra whip might could do the trick!

I’m sure a lot of the trouble is sleeping with my own Prince Charming who happens to have sleep apnea. He uses a CPAP machine at night to keep him alive. If the tube slips a little, I am no longer sleeping with Prince Charming, but now I’m awake planning the death of Darth Vader. What woman hasn’t thought about killing her man in his sleep while he snores like a twister from tornado alley? WE NEED OUR SLEEP!

Yes I’m in touch with my doctor about all my problems. No I don’t use homeopathic meds or rituals. I do Yoga and drink. I’ve heard that alcohol can make the symptoms worse but for the love I am not giving up my cocktails.

But the last symptom that has come back with a vengeance is muscle cramps. My calves start to cramp up and my toes start to curl up on their own and I can’t uncurl them! What the heck! I’m up at 2 am trying to stiffly walk off the cramps, running into furniture while Darth Vader is slumbering in our bed like he has no freaking worries whatsoever! We woman have it rough. Puberty, Pregnancy, Menopause then death.

Anyone else? I mean go ahead and vent with me Y’all! We can start a tribe. What should we name our tribe of menopausal hangry women? lol

Keep on laughing ladies. It’s all we can do!

Peace, Love and Margaritas!

  1. Lady! I didn’t even want to LIKE this post because I am not liking that you are going through this. I am here to tell you that it does get better. Said by someone who skated past menopause so quickly that a hot flash was a mere glimpse of my past. And who are we kidding??!! I had them. They would have me flipping the covers on and off all night long! All while smacking the now ex (not for this reason) to make sure he was still alive whenever he stopped snoring, because, believe me, that snoring was the only way I knew he was alive. After nagging long enough he got tested and CPAPed. The lull of the machine actually helped and boy oh boy no more snoring. UGHs that Darth Vader’s machine hiccups. RATS!! Now, at 65, the worse problem I have at bed time is sleeping. That’s because my brain won’t shutdown properly. And I use the natural stuff which helps, but some nights I just cannot sleep. Sometimes I just chuck it all and read until the reader falls on my face or get up and write. Then, come morning, when I may get to sleep by some miracle, I don’t wanna get up. In a way it does get better. Just enjoy those beverages and enjoy your favorite foods, because when you get to my age you start losing the ability to taste many foods and I am getting really tired of detecting salt and sweet and not much else. I cannot believe I thought at one time this would be a blessing so I would not eat so much. HAHAHA that’s not true. I am in search of something I can taste. Is that to much to ask? And if I reek of herbs and garlic blame it on my pursuit of some kind of flavor. Well, I feel better, Dear Abby…how about you? ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. ๐Ÿ˜€ oh…and I was looking for my glasses because I set them down beside me and they were not there and they were on the floor only after I searched every other place in the house. My life…

  2. I just started with the hot flashes, I am 52 and they came on suddenly and no matter how cold and breezy I keep the room. I am dying. The only way I can get a good night sleep is to take a z quil sleeping aide but the morning hang over from that lingers all day. I will not give up my caffeine or my margaritas cause those keep me sane while sleep deprived

  4. I hear you! My flushes stop, maybe for a month or two, then the second I breathe a sigh of relief, they’re back with a vengeance! The quality of my sleep has deteriorated too and believe it or not, I didn’t realise until recently that this was a symptom of the menopause. To top it all off, I have several friends who are menopause-deniers. They seem to be sailing through it so believe that it’s all in the head!!!

  5. I’m in the beginning of this delightful journey and am not a fan. The sleep deprivation and bloating are going to be my end.

Hang in there friend and thanks for the laugh. โ˜บ๏ธ

  6. I have had hot flashes now for 13 years, and nothing I have tried has ever helped. I’m beginning to believe that I am one of the unfortunate ones that will have them for life. I really didn’t think this would happen to me when my mother didn’t get them at all. I hate this. I am praying my daughter never has to go through it. They use to call getting your period “the curse”, well I think getting menopause is the curse.

    1. Wow! Are we sisters? Iโ€™m in the same boat. Iโ€™m 50 but periods ended 5 years ago and hot flashes are going on year 9. BHRT helped initially, but the hot flashes and sweats are back with a vengeance that I almost forgot how dreadful they are. I am a severe hot flashes with flashes every 15 minutes around the clock ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. My aunt said my great grandma Henry died at 96, still having hot flashes ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I pray that is not me or Iโ€™ll end up in the looney bin. Hugs to all suffering terribly!
