Alexa, Play “Midlife Margaritas” – One Woman’s Journey from Home Office Chaos to Cocktail Hour Bliss

So, I did a thing. For Christmas this year, Chris and I gave each other early gifts. He loves to cook and bake so I got him the Mack Daddy of kitchen mixers (KitchenAid) and he got me Alexa. Why are we so late to get an AI voice in the house? Because we never really needed it. But lately, since I work from home, I wanted an assistant to turn on my lights, take notes and order crap on Amazon for me. I’ve become THAT person. Lol

But I never thought Alexa would cause so much trouble. She started out arguing over recipes with my husband. I couldn’t believe my ears. It was about using self-rising flour to make cookies when we were out of all-purpose. Chris just wanted to know how much of it to use and if there was anything else to add that would keep the cookies tasting like, well, cookies. Alexa was pretty much telling him to go to the store and buy the right flour or she could order it for him. He was trying to explain the situation to her and kept cutting her off mid-sentence. She was getting louder, and he was getting frustrated, and I was in the next room with my mouth wide open in shock that this was even happening! I yelled out to Chris to let her finish her freakin sentence and stop interrupting her. He was like she doesn’t understand! I’m like, SHE’S NOT A REAL PERSON!

But this is just how things go here at Midlife Margaritas.

Just yesterday I went into my office and asked Alexa to turn on the office light since I’m carrying a hot coffee and a pop tart with the dog following super close behind so he can snag the pop tart if I stumble and drop it. She says Sure in her chipper voice then says to me, “I found a new routine of playing Rap music first thing in the morning if you would like to get started with that now”? WTH?

I said Alexa, Rap music is a bit much for early morning don’t ya think? She says, OK what about classical music? At this point, I feel like she’s trying to sell me something. So, I politely say, “How about no”. I don’t think Alexa spoke the rest of the day.

But the funniest Alexa story so far is when I was making up the bed the other day. I was huffing and puffing trying to make the bed with the 75-pound dog still in it because he refused to get out, so I half spoke half-whispered (because out of breath) Alexa, play some upbeat music. She responded by whispering back to me, “OK but you don’t have to whisper”.

How smart are these AI’s getting? I bet some of you out there have some great Alexa stories too. I would love to hear them!
