Where Has the Funny Gone? (2019) Update: 2023-Still Can’t Find the Funny!

I wrote this piece back in 2019 when the world started to catch on fire. Today (3-26-2023) It’s still burning. So, I thought I re-share this post and add a few updates. Why haven’t we emerged from this fire like the phoenix we are?

I try to find humor every day. This morning while I waited in line at Starbucks, I noticed two older Japanese men. (I think they were Japanese, not sure) As they walked to their car, they were speaking to each other in their own language. What was so funny was, I knew exactly what they were saying without knowing the language.

The men were both in their late 70’s possibly 80’s. Great health and super cute. One of the men, who was in the best shape, seemed to show his svelte waistline to his friend. Then he poked the other guy in his gut! I thought a fight was about to break out in the parking lot! The man with the tiny beer gut then punched the other guy in his arm and they both laughed. I was laughing too from my car. They saw me and pointed and laughed again because they knew I knew what they were saying. Made my day to see two old guys ribbing each other about their weight. I haven’t seen any laughing in public since then.

Then I realized that was first time I had seen others laughing and joking in public in quite a while. Where has the funny gone?

I know my girl gang group laughs often. We can’t help but act immaturely and laugh at things that most wouldn’t admit to laughing at. We don’t care. Laughing is good for the soul and if nobody dies, it’s worth the laugh for us. We get stares and nasty looks from people but then we notice some who laugh or chuckle while looking away from us. Maybe we are a bit too loud or our “tickle boxes” get turned over at the wrong time but we really don’t care. Life is too short.

I can’t watch regular TV anymore. I used to watch the news as I was getting ready in the mornings but a few months ago something was said on the news and I thought, really? They don’t report the news anymore. It’s all their opinions of what might be considered the news of the morning. Some mornings I actually about poke my eyeballs out with the eyeliner pencil because I’m getting so outraged first thing in the morning! Now I turn on a music video channel and mornings are much better. I still don’t watch the news in the mornings now it’s just reading my funny friends on Twitter and Vids on TikTok, that might gone too soon.

Late night shows are nothing but politics now. Including Saturday Night Live. I just watched the first show of the season this weekend and was not amused. Now I watch comics on Netflix instead. If anyone brings up news or politics, I’m out. Friends who preach their politics or create controversy on social media get blocked. You see, life is too short to stay mad, sad, annoyed and frustrated. Where has the funny gone? Just for the record, SNL is still not funny. I keep watching and hoping it will be funny again.

Comedians are under fire now too. Anything they have ever said or done is on video or Twitter. And will be used against them. To silence them. Now award shows go without hosts because no comic out there hasn’t said something politically incorrect. Freedom of speech much? Comedians used to say the things we were thinking but would never say out loud. They had a pass. Right or wrong, it made us laugh. Made us think for ourselves. Made it ok to laugh for a while. No more. Where has the funny gone? Now comedians get heckled and tossed out of their own shows, beat up and slapped on stage. Welcome to the new world.

So, I say this. I don’t care if I piss you off. Say or write something that offends you. It’s game on in this world. My goal is to make people chuckle for a minute to forget all the crap that is going on in our world today. We are not promised tomorrow, and I don’t want to die being miserable and angry at the world. I want to go out laughing and drinking too many margaritas and still being in love with life. Let the miserable people sort out the social issues and politics. Me, I’m ok with not worrying about that stuff. Life is too short. Update: I’m very bothered by that stuff because there is no getting away from it. If you make fun of it, you are considered a bad person. But that’s ok because I’m entering a new season of my life and you all are about to witness the resurgence of Midlife Margaritas in a very interesting way! Coming soon!

  1. I also LOVE the NetFlix comedians! I sometimes keep it on in the background when I am working on a project. And I do so wish people were not so uptight and afraid to hug. After sexual harrassment training at work everybody quit hugging and I worked with recovering alcoholics. Now, that’s just weird.

  2. Once I stopped listening to the news (I haven’t watched any Late Night in 3 years since you-know-who was elected) I have found the world to be a much happier place. Like you, I avoid anything to do with politics. This country right now, is an absolute disgrace!!!
    What I do now is listen to music, preferably the free Spotify. I play music from the 70’s, 60’s and sometimes Pure Disco. This was a happier time in my life and I’d rather remember those memories than what is going on today. As I said, once I did this, the world looks so much more nicer, brighter and happier.
    Thanks for posting your blog entry today. I thought I was the only one acting like this.
    Sad, sad commentary on our country, isn’t it?

Made it ok to laugh for awhile.” I totally agree! 👍🏽 Oh how I miss those days of comedians’ ability to make clever, off-the-cuff observations about the world we live in and have the humor and truth of it strike us until we rolled with laughter. Nowadays, everyone has to be so extra careful not to offend one group or another that even our comedians hold back, which is more tragedy than comedy.

  5. To quote Bob Newhart from his TV sitcom, when someone asked him, “Where does the time go?” He answered, “Cleveland.” I’m thinking that’s also where the funny went. It’s hiding on the Lake Erie shoreline, disguised as dead fish, under some rocks—occasionally smelling of past fart jokes and decaying hope. Let’s make America laugh again! Who remembers Comedian Pat Paulsen running for president? Those were the days, my friends. 😀

  6. You want to finally have a good laugh at all the crap that is going on in America right now? I highly recommend seeing Bill Burr: Paper Tiger on Netflix. He filmed it in London and doesn’t give one iota about being politically correct. He blasts everyone and everything. Go watch and laugh your head off. We all needed it!

  8. Thank you for posting this. I grew up in an Italian-Jewish household and boy do I have a lot of funny material about it! People are funny and we need to celebrate it! I started a blog to make light of our foibles. If we can’t laugh at them, then what’s the point? You just reminded me of how important it is to not be sensitive; to see the humor in life.
